SCHOOL OPENS!
9/6/2010
—Carol Stock

Hi!  We'll see you tomorrow...

Some information you will need follows:

The RUE gym will open at 7:30 AM.  Folks can gather there or outside.  Everyone goes upstairs at 8:20 AM.

At Demarest, you will gather in front of the stairs on 4th Street.  Odalis will be there every morning to greet you.  The doors open at 8:20 AM.

For TUESDAY, the first day of school  ONLY, no breakfast will be served.  There is no After-School Program.  Everything begins on Wednesday, Sept. 8, including Early Morning Drop-Off.

Any Demarest students dropped off at Rue will be escorted (every day) by an Elysian staff member.  Also, any Demarest student who needs to be dismissed from RUE, will be escorted to RUE at the end of each school day.

The PTSO has had to move some of its meetings to some Thursdays.  Please check the website calendar and home page for up-to-the-date information.

Your teachers at Elysian have been working very hard all summer to get their rooms ready to welcome your children.  In spite of very hot temperatures, they gave up a lot of days during their summer vacation, and created classroom environments that are stunning.  Wait until you see them.

We had more than 40 volunteer painters who came up from the South to paint our school.  As part of our thank-you package, if you like what you see, would you please write a short thank-you note and send it to me, Carol?  I am preparing a thank-you packet with photos and notes to send to the volunteers who made our school so beautiful.

ARE YOU READING OUR      E-MAILS AND NEWSLETTERS?

Elysian now sends most of its communications electronically.  If you don't have e-mail, please tell the main office so we can try to mail you home a paper copy.

If you do get our "stuff" via e-mail, please open and read or print it.  There is often useful information right there at your fingertips.  There's a lot going on at Elysian; be part of it!

Summer Edition II
8/5/2010
—Carol Stock

I just posted the latest summer newsletter on our website.  Also, the same newsletter was sent out to everyone via e-mail.  Please check it out.  It's very long, and wordy, too, but there's a lot of data you may find useful.

Are you receiving our e-mail NEWSLETTERS?  Are you opening them?  If you're not getting emails from Elysian Charter, please send your current e-mail address to carolstock53@hotmail.com

If you ARE receiving our e-mails but NOT OPENING THEM, please, as a favor, take a glance.  A lot of us work very hard to get all of our information to you.  Even if you find one sentence that proves useful, it's worth it!  Please give it a glance.  Thanks.

Best regards to all   ...   Carol

MATH IN THE SUMMER
7/7/2010
—Hillary Quist

Math in the Summer?   Absolutely!

Summer is here and we have a nice long break until September 7th.  Kids who do some math work over the summer will be ready to go in the fall.  Just a little time each week playing on the math sites below or reading one of the books suggested here, will help kids to keep concepts fresh.  Don’t forget that all of the things that you do like cooking, planning trips, finding the best deal on groceries, playing card and board games and playing sports all involve math as well!

Happy Summer!

The Elysian Staff

Books!

Fortunately there are many fabulously fun and interesting books that contain math ideas out there.  Check out the following sites for lists of books to spark math thinking and math ideas:

The well-developed site below lists books related to math for every grade!

RUE GETS PAINTED
7/5/2010
—Carol Stock

This morning a team of about 25 young people and adults came to Hoboken from Alabama.  They are staying at the Stevens Institute of Technology and painting the rooms on our 4th floor at RUE.  They will then move on to work at the Mustard Seed school towards then end of the week.

After dispensing 25 staple removers, I watched how they patiently began to remove all of the staples, pieces of scotch tape, and push pins from the walls.  Blue tape started going up around all of the edges, and ladders were being carried back and forth.

As the painting of the RUE office began, they decided to do 2 coats of the beautiful light green that was purchased.  Our appeal for paint was hugely successful, and we got all that we needed to do the job.  To the paint purchasers:  THANK-YOU!

They'll be back tomorrow morning at 7:30.  I think everyone is going to LOVE the new look.   If you want to come to say "hello" or even pick up a paint roller, feel free to stop by tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday (7/6 & 7/7)

"Thanks" for this morning's washing of the moulding and baseboards go to:  Lynn Kluepfel, David Naumann, and Janet Rothermel.
